Experts said it was impossible.
People had tried for thousands of years, but always fell short.
The naysayers said to give up on the dream.
The odds were stacked against anyone that would try.
Humans are incapable of achieving this feat.
Stop wishing for a miracle that is out of reach.
You do not have the capacity to perform at that level.
It has never been done and you most certainly will not be the first.
Stop being such a dreamer and come back down to this planet.
This is the belief system that the world attempted to download into the mind of Roger Bannister, but on May 6, 1954, he proved that the impossible was not only possible but that this new possibility would become the standard.
The Origin of the 4 Minute Mile
The four-minute mile, also known as the four-minute barrier, was a feat that scientists, doctors, and coaches said was simply impossible for the human body to attain. Records show that thousands of people attempted this milestone, all of which would fall short by seconds.
But the impossible is only a decision that people either choose to adopt as their reality or choose to use as their motivation.
For Roger Bannister, he chose the latter and his story is so similar to the one that you might be writing today.
In one of the most iconic sporting moments in history, Bannister had intended to retire after the 1952 Olympics, but having only come in 4th in the 1500m final, he decided to hang on for another two years to make an attempt at the holy grail of middle-distance running – the four-minute mile.
On May 6, 1954, in front of all the critics and nonbelievers, Roger proved that the barrier of the four-minute mile was simply a limitation in one’s mind as he accomplished this feat in 3 minutes 59.4 seconds.
Roger Set a New Standard
The most fascinating element of this record was the number of days it lasted — only 46!!!!
To date, the four-minute mile has been broken thousands of times each year, even by high school athletes, and guess what?
The human body is still the human body.
The shoes people wear might be of higher quality, but they don’t create a significant difference.
The mile is still a mile.
And although nothing really changed, everything changed because the once impossible feat was proven to not only be possible but rather a new, extremely attainable standard.
What is Your 4 Minute Mile?
Roger Bannister was an athletic entrepreneur because he created something out of nothing.
He proved that the only thing standing between him and his goal was himself and he was going to go beyond his capacity to get what he wanted.
Roger had no Plan B, which happens to be an excuse to miss Plan A, and instead, he focused on his one and only plan – break the 4-minute mile.
What I find to be interesting for anyone in a position where they are selling a product, service, or mission is that there have already been dozens of versions of the 4-minute mile.
There have been Chiropractors who have built a dream practice.
There have been Real Estate Professionals who became leaders in their communities.
There have been Financial Service Professionals who are sought after because of their Process Mastery.
There have been Network Marketing Professionals who had no network that built 7-figure businesses.
There have been Lawyers who took on every David versus Goliath case and won.
And then there is you…
What is your FOUR-MINUTE MILE?!!?
The odds are, whatever your four-minute mile is right now, it has already been accomplished which means that it is possible.
Now you just need to operate from this place and know that you can do it. You too can demolish whatever feat you desire to achieve in your life.
Sales is not hard, but it does require an insane commitment, massive action, and hyper consistency.
This is no difference between what was required of Roger Bannister when he accomplished the four-minute mile. He needed to train his body with an insane commitment level; he needed to take massive action by pushing himself past the point of comfort; and he needed to do all of this on a hyper consistent basis.
The question you need to ask yourself is…
How badly do you want it?
How badly do you want to experience FREEDOM?
How badly do you want to eliminate financial stresses?
How badly do you want to make your own hours and spend more time with your family?
Roger Bannister was obsessive about his desire to accomplish this feat which is why he only had one plan – demolish the record.
But What If Your 4-Minute Mile Has Never Been Achieved Before
Let’s pretend that what you are striving to achieve has never taken place before.
I often find it difficult to think of scenarios that have yet to be proven in the world of sales simply because there are so many fantastic people who are offering valuable products, services, and missions, but if for some reason whatever it is that you desire has never happened before then here are your options…
- Wait for a Roger Bannister to do it so that this becomes the new standard.
- Become Roger Bannister and set a new standard.
Personally, I am crazy impatient and I won’t wait for anyone to prove to me that something is possible, and instead, I will be the trailblazer that sets an entirely new standard.
And if I had to guess, you are probably just like me.
You are not going to sit around and wait for someone else in your industry to break a record.
You are not going to wait for someone in your town to win big while you play it small.
You are not going to let anyone or anything control your destiny, but YOU!
